You've said yes to the dress  - congratulations! Now comes one of the most important (and sometimes overlooked) steps in your bridal journey: scheduling your alterations appointment. Getting the timing right can mean the difference between a perfectly fitted gown and a last-minute scramble with extra rush fees. Here's everything you need to know.

The Golden Rule: Start Earlier Than You Think

Most brides are surprised to learn that alterations aren't a one-and-done appointment. A full bridal alteration process typically involves two to three fittings spread over several weeks. That means you'll want to build in plenty of time before your wedding day.

As a general guideline:

  • Book your first alterations appointment about 4 months before your wedding if you want a relaxed, stress-free experience. Some alteration specialists will want to start out with a consultation and that can be booked even 5 months out sometimes.

  • At a minimum, start no later than 2–3 months out. Any closer than that and you're cutting it tight - alterations specialists might already be booked up by then, too.

Why So Far In Advance?

Bridal gowns are different garments than a day-to-day shirt or pants. Depending on your gown, alterations can include taking in or letting out the bodice, hemming the skirt and train, adding a bustle, altering straps or sleeves, and adding boning or cups for support. Each adjustment takes time and after each fitting, the seamstress needs time to complete the work before your next visit.

A Typical Alterations Timeline

Here's what a smooth alterations journey often looks like:

First Fitting (About 12 weeks before the wedding) This is your initial consultation with the seamstress. She'll assess what needs to be done and begin pinning the dress. You'll also discuss your undergarments, shoes, and any accessories so everything is accounted for from the start.

Second Fitting (6 to 8 weeks before the wedding) This appointment checks the progress and makes any additional adjustments. The dress should be starting to feel like yours at this point.

Final Fitting (2 to 3 weeks before the wedding) Your gown should fit beautifully by now. This last visit is for final tweaks and gives you peace of mind heading into the big day. You'll take your dress home shortly after.

Key Things to Keep in Mind

  • Wear your wedding shoes and undergarments to every fitting. The height of your heel affects your hem, and the right undergarments affect how the gown fits.

  • Body fluctuations are normal. Let your seamstress know if your measurements have recently changed or if you're working toward a fitness goal. They can advise on the best time to begin alterations based on your unique circumstances.

Don't Wait Until it Feels Too Late

Many brides put off booking alterations because the wedding still feels far away and then all of the sudden, it isn't. A good alteration specialist’s schedule fills up quickly, especially in peak wedding season (spring and fall). The earlier you book, the more flexibility you'll have.
