In our bridal appointments, we often get asked what kind of dresses are best for brides with a larger bust! Sometimes, it can be difficult to envision how a dress will truly fit in your bust once it's in your size. Without a little guidance, it can make the dress shopping process stressful! To make it fun and easy, here are a few of our fave tips to confidently shop for your wedding dress as a busty bride.
Bras are your BFF.
All brides are welcome to try on dresses with or without their bra. There are cups or support sewn into most of our sample dresses, but it's no secret that one sample cup size will not fit every bride perfectly. You'll get your cups fitted in alterations, but while you're trying on samples, it can be tricky! If you're a bride with a bigger bust, popping on a strapless, supportive bra may help give you a better idea of how the dress will fit once it's altered.
Play with different back options!
Some of our favorite styles for busty brides have high backs. This, as opposed to an open back, offers just a tiny extra touch of support! Although you will get your bodice fitted to your body in alterations, some brides are still most comfortable wearing a bra on their wedding day. With a high back, you don't have to worry about any bra straps showing! Alternatively, if you love the look of an open back but would like a little extra support, opt for a dress with an illusion back. Skin-colored mesh can give the illusion of an open back, but still offer more coverage!
Speaking of illusion...
Illusion mesh isn't just for the back, either! If you love a deep-v neckline but aren't sure about the exposure, think about adding a bit of mesh in the neckline! This holds everything in place and won't make you feel quite as exposed.
What other necklines are on the table?
Not crazy about the deep-v? There are so many other flattering necklines for bustier brides! A boatneck offers a delicate and dainty look à la Meghan Markle, and gives you the high back option. Strapless or off-the-shoulder dresses are great options too, as they'll allow you to wear a strapless bra underneath and still feel secure!
Think about your strap options!
A lot of busty brides tend to like the option of wearing a strap. With the weight of a bigger bust, a spaghetti strap can sometimes dig into your shoulder or rub uncomfortably. Thicker straps are usually a way more comfy route to take, but they're not the only option! Cap sleeves can add a small, feminine touch to a dress. Strapless dresses can be surprisingly supportive as well, once fitted through the bust.
What about the rest of the dress?
No doubt, a busty bride can rock any silhouette. With the skirt of your dress, you'll want to take your natural body shape into account as well as your bust. If you have full hips and a slim waist, mermaid dresses will give you that full hourglass figure. If you have smaller hips, consider opting for an a-line or ballgown! The way those silhouettes cinch your waist and flare out will draw focus away from the bust and again create an hourglass figure!
Most importantly: wear what makes you feel confident!
Every bride feels her most confident in something different. If that means sporting a strapless mermaid dress - do it! If you don't know what style will make you feel your best, we have good news for you! You never have to figure it out on your own. Trust your stylist and let her know what your concerns are. Your stylist's ultimate goal is to find you something that will make you feel confident, empowered, and secure. Put your body first, find what makes you feel beautiful, and the rest will truly fall into place.
