February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans across all fields. At Miss Ruby Bridal, we believe in uplifting the diverse voices and talents that make the wedding industry so vibrant and beautiful. Today, we're spotlighting three influential Black professionals whose creativity, innovation, and dedication have transformed how we celebrate such monumental moments in life.

1. Preston Bailey - The King of Luxury Wedding Floral Design
When you think of show-stopping, over-the-top floral installations and breathtaking wedding transformations, Preston Bailey's name should come to mind. Often called the "King of Luxury Wedding Design," Bailey has been creating unforgettable celebrations for over four decades.
Starting from humble beginnings in Panama, Bailey moved to New York and built an empire that has served celebrities, royalty, and couples worldwide. His signature style blends dramatic floral arrangements with innovative lighting and unexpected design elements. Bailey has designed florals for Liza Minnelli, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, and countless other high-profile clients. His work has been featured in top publications like Vogue, Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, and The New York Times.
What makes Bailey truly influential isn't just his celebrity clientele - it's his ability to tell stories through design. He's authored multiple bestselling books, sharing his expertise with aspiring designers and couples alike. His work has elevated event design to an art form and opened doors for countless designers of color in the luxury wedding space.
2. Harriette Cole - Media Maven and Cultural Wedding Expert
Harriette Cole is a powerhouse in lifestyle media with a special focus on wedding traditions, etiquette, and culture. As the author of "Jumping the Broom: The African-American Wedding Planner," Cole brought national attention to African and African-American wedding traditions, helping and guiding couples to honor their heritage while planning their celebrations.
Cole's career spans decades as a writer, editor, and lifestyle expert. She served as Creative Director for Ebony magazine and has been a contributing editor for numerous publications. Through her books, media appearances, and consulting work, she's educated millions about wedding customs, proper etiquette, and the rich traditions that make Black weddings unique and meaningful.
Her book "Jumping the Broom" became a cultural resource that validated and celebrated Black wedding traditions at a time when mainstream wedding media rarely acknowledged cultural diversity. Cole gave voice to traditions that had been passed down through generations but were often overlooked in mainstream wedding culture, helping countless couples embrace their heritage with pride.
3. Diann Valentine - A Pioneer Event Designer and Cultural Ambassador
Diann Valentine stands as one of the most respected names in luxury event and wedding planning. As the founder of Diann Valentine Inc., she's spent over three decades creating extraordinary celebrations while breaking barriers in an industry that hasn’t always been welcoming to Black professionals.
Valentine's work has been featured in top publications like Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, and InStyle. She's planned events for celebrities, top corporations, and discerning couples who want weddings that reflect sophistication, cultural awareness, and impeccable taste. Her designs often incorporate rich cultural elements, whether celebrating African heritage, honoring family traditions, or creating entirely new rituals for modern couples.
Beyond her client work, Valentine has been an advocate for diversity in the events industry. She mentors young planners of color and speaks openly about the highs and lows of building a business as a Black woman in luxury spaces. Valentine proved that Black-owned businesses could compete at the highest levels of luxury event planning while maintaining cultural authenticity and creating pathways for the next generation.
Celebrating Diversity in Wedding Planning
These three trailblazers remind us that the wedding industry is richer, more creative, and more meaningful when it reflects the diversity of the couples it serves. Their contributions go beyond beautiful centerpieces or a completely curated timeline - they've expanded our understanding of what weddings can be and whose stories deserve to be celebrated.
As you plan your special day, whether you're here in Milwaukee or anywhere else, we encourage you to seek inspiration from diverse voices, honor your unique heritage, and remember that your wedding should reflect your authentic love story.
From all of us at Miss Ruby Bridal, we celebrate these wedding industry icons and look forward to being a part in helping you create a wedding day vision that's as unique and beautiful as your love story.
